The team finishes the time trial season with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the men 35-39 categories. The women also represented with a silver in the women 40-44 category.

At this Sunday’s NM State Road Race Championships the team won several gold medals by winning races in the men’s Cat 1/2, men’s Cat 3/4, men cat 5, masters men and women categories. The picture shows Clarissa Freeman on the way to a silver medal!

Rider Spotlight – Tanya Bettis

This month we highlight Tanya Bettis, one of the recent additions to the team, and Gold winner in the 2010 New Mexico State Road Race Championships.

Here are some questions we asked her:

How long have you been racing?
About 12 years.

What draws you to racing both on and off road?
The desire and satisfaction of competing. I still learn about strategy with each road race and with the off road racing, I find new limits of how hard I can push myself.

Why should others ride a bike?
It’s a great way to meet people with the same interests, fun way to stay in shape, and most importantly – it’s an awesome stress reliever!

Tell us about your life off of the bike?
My husband and I have two boys that are 3 and 4 yrs old…need I say more.

What was your first win on a bike, and looking back how important was it?
My first triathlon win was an all women’s race in Honolulu with a great competitive field – that really made me feel like I had “arrived” and all those years of training had paid off. My first road win was the “Cycle to the Sun” hill climb race up Haleakala on Maui – after I got back down to sea level (from 10,000 feet!), I thought “what an awesome race”.

Tell us about the ladies squad on our team.
Everyone is so friendly and super supportive – I am so happy to be a part of this team. I think our women’s team is and will continue to be a major force to be reckoned with!

How was the 2010 State Road Championships…and how do you feel about your WIN?
Surprisingly, I felt really good. It was a tough, hot day out there and the field was one of the best competitive races I’ve been in since living in NM. It was great to see that many women out there.

What are your big goals for next year?
I’m planning on giving the Tour of the Gila a legitimate effort to test myself in a true stage race. I’m moving up to Cat 1 off road so I really want to challenge myself and try to qualify for Nationals.

What’s the biggest lesson you are passing onto the newer riders?
Just because you ride tubeless, doesn’t mean you won’t get a flat even though you haven’t had one for a YEAR (a la Cedro Peak) – hahaha! Seriously, give yourself time to develop – the experience and strength will come. Also, make sure to HAVE FUN!!!

NM MTB Championships Saw Record Attendance

The 2010 edition of the New Mexico Mountain Bike Championships saw record attendance. We had 263 race registration from over 180 racers (see results). Thanks to everyone that came to race, and we hope you enjoyed the new courses, food and beer. We have listen to your feedback, and will incorporate many of the suggestions into next year’s race.

Damian Wins the Santa Fe Hill Climb for the 6th Year

This past Sunday Damian Calvert won the Santa Fe hill climb for the 6th year in a row. This short, but brutal race starts in Santa Fe, and climbs all the way to the Santa Fe ski area. The course is a 14.7 mile climb, with approximately 3300ft of climbing.

The finish came down to an exciting sprint, as this video clip shows:
